When Toast was first rescued, she was in rough shape. Her eyes were nearly sealed shut, and she was much smaller than the other kittens, about half their size. “She could barely walk around,” shared Hannah Taff, who is fostering Toast, with The Dodo.
Despite her tiny start, Toast began to recover swiftly over the following weeks. However, as she grew healthier, an unexpected change occurred—her appearance became increasingly unusual.
Initially, Toast appeared just like any other kitten in the group. But suddenly, her fur began to stick out wildly, giving her a perpetually tousled look.
No matter how often she is groomed, Toast’s fur always seems to look disheveled, as if she just woke up from a nap. This perpetually messy look has puzzled those who meet her.
“She does get bathed and brushed daily,” Taff noted. “A lot of people thought she just needed a bath to look normal—but nope, she’s just special!”
Interestingly, Toast seems blissfully unaware of her unique appearance. Her lively personality often quickly wins over anyone who is taken aback by how she looks at first.
“People almost always say, ‘She’s so ugly she’s cute,’ which is true,” Taff explained. “But they all fall in love with her because of her amazing personality.”
While Toast does have some eye issues that Taff is actively managing, she is otherwise just a carefree kitten.
Toast is rather vocal, hasn’t yet perfected using the litter box without getting messy, loves to climb and scramble around, and isn’t concerned at all with her scruffy looks. Though she might appear a bit sleepy, she’s full of energy and fun.
