In a heartwarming tale of rescue, Officer Joe Brazil of the Woonsocket Police Department in Rhode Island became a local hero after he courageously saved a distressed Yorkshire terrier.
The story, shared by Peggy Edwards on Facebook on May 2, 2016, quickly gained attention and captured the hearts of many.
The incident began when a little Yorkie, later identified as Cece, was startled by a passing car and bolted into a nearby tunnel.
Peggy, who witnessed the terrified pup’s escape, was desperate to help but feared that approaching might cause the dog to retreat further into danger.
Realizing the situation required assistance, Peggy contacted the local police. Officer Joe Brazil promptly arrived at the scene, ready to lend a hand. Without any hesitation, he assessed the situation as Peggy informed him of the dog’s predicament.
Removing his shoes and socks, Officer Brazil cautiously made his way into the tunnel, being mindful not to scare Cece further.
Demonstrating great care and patience, he allowed the frightened pup to sniff his fingers, gradually gaining her trust until he was close enough to lift her to safety.
In an interview with WJAR NBC10, Brazil reflected on the moment he rescued Cece, saying, “It almost appeared like she was saying thank you. She seemed to know I was there to help.”
This little Yorkie was more than just a stray. It turned out that Cece belonged to a loving family and had accidentally escaped earlier. Michelle Perez, Cece’s owner, expressed immense relief and gratitude upon hearing the news.
“She is just five months old. I couldn’t sleep,” Perez shared in an interview. “All I kept doing was driving around and calling her.”
Thanks to the combined efforts of Peggy Edwards and Officer Joe Brazil, Cece was safely reunited with her family. The community celebrated this successful rescue, overjoyed by the happy ending for Cece and her owner.
