A firefighter in California went above and above to help a dog who had fallen from heat and smoke.
A fire broke out last week in a Santa Monica apartment building, and firefighters discovered a dog named Nalu who was lifeless, not breathing, and didn’t even have a pulse.
“I found him in the midst of all the smoke and heat,” fireman Andrew Klein told KABC. “I grabbed him, and as soon as I grabbed, I knew he was unresponsive just by his lifeless weight.”
Klein gave the puppy CPR, often known as “mouth-to-snout,” and then put him in an oxygen mask. After about 20 minutes, the dog began to breathe on its own.
He regained consciousness and began moving about. Neighbors eventually brought him to a nearby animal hospital.
“It was quite incredible because I’ve been on a lot of animal rescues like this that didn’t turn out the same way that Nalu’s tale did,” Klein told KTLA. “Getting him back was undoubtedly a triumph for the entire squad and the department.”
Firefighters took care of the fire in 10 minutes, and no humans were harmed in the blaze.
