In a recent encounter near Trani and Barletta in Italy, the Lega Del Cane Trani rescue team faced one of the year’s most distressing cases.
A traveler spotted a small puppy just inches away from an abandoned suitcase on the roadside, a sight that revealed the unfortunate situation the little dog had endured.

The suitcase’s damage suggested that the puppy had been cruelly left inside it, evidently meant to be discarded. Yet, the determined pup managed to escape, despite being visibly exhausted and weak.
Upon discovering the puppy, the concerned man immediately contacted the rescue squad, who swiftly took over his care.
However, the puppy’s condition was dire, as he suffered from severe health issues, including gastrointestinal distress and a lack of trust in humans, which made administering aid quite challenging.
Tests revealed alarming results: the puppy, now named Kei, was struggling with anemia, hyperparathyroidism, liver failure, and tissue necrosis.
Additionally, his intestines were obstructed with stones and foreign materials, according to a spokesperson from the rescue foundation.
Despite the overwhelming obstacles, the team was determined to help Kei find happiness. As one online commenter praised, “Those who discovered him and saved him are angels.”
Over the following weeks, Kei, though initially weak, began to gain strength and showed signs of recovery, eventually managing to stand and eat independently. His biggest challenge, however, was learning to trust people again.
“Whether Kei is a young pup or an older one affected by trauma, we can’t say for sure,” remarked a rescuer. Nevertheless, Kei slowly began to open up to the veterinarians’ care, realizing it was helping him regain his strength.
It’s encouraging to know that Kei received the necessary support after such a troubling past. While he awaits adoption, the rescuers emphasize that whoever takes him in will need to commit to his continued physical and emotional rehabilitation.
Kei’s story highlights the importance of standing against animal abuse. It’s crucial that those responsible for such cruel acts are held accountable. As Kei embarks on his path to recovery, the hope is that he will soon find a loving home where he can thrive.
