After enduring days without food or water while held captive by her supposed caretaker, a young dog let out desperate cries for help. Her loud pleas caught the attention of neighbors who quickly alerted authorities.
Backed by local police, APAI Belém—a group of independent defenders that runs an animal shelter in Belém, Pará—rescued her from the years of neglect and abuse. Once safe, she was given a thorough bath and conducted a full health checkup.
One of the first tasks was to remove numerous ticks from her ears. Following this, she was placed in a separate recovery space. Vets performed a comprehensive blood test to evaluate her health due to an unplanned pregnancy.

Under the loving care of the shelter staff, the dog continued to recover and underwent another set of medical examinations.
The veterinarian confirmed her pregnancy but noted that while she was healthy overall, giving birth might be a challenge due to her malnourished state.
The next day, she received an additional vaccine and an X-ray to monitor the growth of her unborn puppies. Her progress was promising—she gained 1.4 kilograms and was improving steadily every day.
As days passed, the once frightened dog became increasingly friendly and sociable, displaying a sweet and gentle temperament.
Approaching her due date and still underweight, veterinarians decided to transport her to an animal hospital to ensure she had the best possible care during delivery.
Fortunately, everything went smoothly, and she welcomed three healthy puppies into the world.
This young dog’s story of resilience and recovery is a testament to the power of compassion and care. If touched by her journey, consider sharing her tale with friends and family.
