During the festive season, many people look forward to receiving gifts that bring joy. However, the tradition of setting New Year’s resolutions often falls by the wayside, with common goals like “going to the gym” or “quitting drinking” usually abandoned by mid-January.
Some individuals extend this short-lived enthusiasm to the impulse of acquiring a pet, neglecting to consider the long-term care required for the animal.
Owning a pet is a serious commitment, but some treat it casually. Once the reality of the responsibility sets in, they abandon the pet.
This unfortunate scenario became all too real for the Stray Rescue of St. Louis, a pet shelter in Missouri. A truck driver had alerted the shelter about finding three young puppies in a crate on the side of the road.
The driver noticed the puppies from afar and saw that they appeared frail and frightened. However, he had to continue his journey. Rescue volunteers promptly responded to his report.
When the team arrived, they confirmed the driver’s distressing discovery. The puppies had been left in awful conditions, likely by someone who grew tired of caring for them.
“These babies are really unhappy. They are terrified and injured as a result of being abandoned this morning. We will do everything in our power to ensure they have a long and beautiful life,” shared a representative from the Stray Rescue of St. Louis.
Given the severity of the situation, the rescue team quickly brought the puppies to the shelter. Once there, they were bottle-fed to stabilize their health.
After gaining some strength, they received medical treatment for open and infected wounds, leading experts to identify several health issues. Thankfully, they are now on the mend, regaining their health and happiness.
A veterinarian noted, “They were in terrible shape. They had open wounds, some of which were infected. This could imply that they were experiencing various forms of health issues.”
The shelter staff believes that the puppies were likely given as Christmas gifts to someone who underestimated the responsibilities of owning them. Now, they are looking for a genuine home where they will be loved and cared for properly.
Share this story with your family and friends as a reminder to think carefully before gifting pets. Animals are not toys, and they deserve homes where they will be cherished.
