In a heartwarming tale of loyalty, Cathleen, a six-year-old dog from Prague, Oklahoma, embarked on an impressive 20-mile journey to reunite with her former family after they relocated and were unable to take her with them.
Her story captivated many after being shared by the local news.
Cathleen had originally been given to a new owner, but her longing for her previous family drove her to take matters into her own paws. Last week, she calmly left her new yard and set off towards her old home.
Though she was caught by animal control while wandering through her old neighborhood, Cathleen seemed determined to reconnect with her past.
Marta Mattingly, from the Seminole Humane Society, told The Dodo that it was clear Cathleen was missing her former family, even if the reasons behind her incredible trek could only be understood by her.
Remarkably, after being returned to her new home, Cathleen attempted the trek once more just days later.
Understanding the risks of repeated escapes, caretakers decided it was best to find Cathleen a new secure home where she could thrive without the temptation of returning to her old stomping grounds.
Once assessed by a veterinarian and given a clean bill of health, Cathleen quickly captured the hearts of the animal shelter staff, prompting a wave of adoption interest.
As Mattingly shared, “After our local news station aired a segment on her, we started receiving calls from across the nation. She’s amazing – really quiet, good with other dogs, and loves all humans.”
Cathleen’s friendly and laid-back personality made her highly sought after.
While Cathleen was undoubtedly sad about parting from her past, she soon found a new family eager to shower her with love.
Her future home in Texas promises acres of securely fenced land for her to explore, along with the companionship of several children and four dog siblings. Mattingly is confident that she will thrive in this new environment.
Mattingly expressed amazement at the number of people willing to travel hundreds of miles to adopt Cathleen, highlighting that despite numerous compelling applications, it was clear she had found her perfect match.
As Cathleen prepares for her new adventure, she does so knowing she has a family ready to provide the affection and home she deserves.
