Caring for dogs with disabilities, like those without sight or hearing, can be incredibly rewarding despite the challenges. These dogs often bring unexpected joy to their adopters, and one such special pup is Tamale.
Tamale is a double merle Australian Shepherd, a genetic mix that often results in blindness and deafness, which is his reality.
Despite these challenges, Tamale’s spirit remains unbroken, offering a reminder of the joy life can bring. Alongside him is his best friend Jimmy, ready to lend a helping nose whenever needed.

When Tamale was only four months old, he was up for adoption through Speak For The Unspoken. Kayleigh Ostot from Ohio felt an instant connection and knew she wanted to provide Tamale with a loving home.
Tamale’s vibrant energy and loving nature quickly won her over, showing that he was no different from any other playful puppy.
As Tamale grew, he learned to navigate life despite occasionally bumping into things. He figured out how to connect with those around him and form friendships.
During the isolation of the pandemic, Tamale found a true friend in a dog named Jimmy.
“Jimmy and Tamale met at the dog park over a year ago,” recalled Ostot. Initially, their owners would arrange dog park visits, but soon they began taking the pups on walks together.

This blossomed into a friendship that saw the two dogs meeting at least weekly, if not more.
Jimmy seemed to understand Tamale’s unique way of experiencing the world. While Tamale can’t see or hear, his sense of smell is keen, allowing him to recognize Jimmy’s presence.
To greet Tamale, Jimmy devised a gentle but heartfelt welcome—a soft nose boop.
Each meeting started with this nose boop, a gesture that quickly became a sweet tradition.
Jimmy’s unconditional love and acceptance demonstrate the true meaning of friendship, where Tamale is not seen as a dog with disabilities, but simply as his best friend.

Now, the nose boop has become Tamale’s universal signal for connection. Even Kayleigh uses it at home to gently wake him, tapping his nose lightly to let him know she’s there.
Rather than focusing on his obstacles, Tamale’s life is filled with joy. With Kayleigh, his family, and his little sister Kiwi, Tamale enjoys each day to the fullest.
His heartwarming adventures are shared on TikTok and Instagram, engaging thousands of fans who admire his charming resilience.
Follow Tamale’s delightful journey and see why his story, along with his nose-booping friends, continues to win hearts everywhere.
