Some dogs need extra care to truly flourish, as not all begin life in a comforting home. Many face hardships early on, often requiring time to learn that humans can be gentle and trustworthy.
This was especially true for a dog named Gabriel, affectionately known as Icky, whose journey to recovery has been one of patience and perseverance.
Before Icky found refuge at Spark of Love Animal Rescue (SLAR) in Woodhaven, Michigan, he had only known life as a breeding dog.
Loud noises and sudden movements left him frightened and wary of people. His path to healing would be intricate and demanding.

Upon his arrival at SLAR, Icky was noticeably terrified. Recognizing his needs, the rescue’s team knew he would benefit from a calm and understanding foster home, so they entrusted him to an experienced foster family with the help of Kari Nulph, SLAR’s president.
At first, Icky was constantly on edge in his new environment. However, he gradually began to change, exploring his surroundings and forming bonds with other pets in the home.
He slowly discovered that playing with other animals and interacting with people could be a source of joy rather than fear. “He is silly and special with his play and love,” the SLAR team shared, highlighting his energetic personality.
After Icky adjusted well, SLAR felt he was ready to be adopted. However, during a trial placement, Icky was taken to a Fourth of July fireworks event which overwhelmed him with its loud sounds, and he ran away in fear.

His foster mom, Kari Nulph, along with dedicated rescuers Kim and Rick Canales and other helpers, immediately set out to find him.
They tirelessly searched the park, distributed flyers, and spoke to park visitors, never giving up hope even as days went by without a sighting.
On the sixth day of their search, everything changed. As they scanned a trail within the park with binoculars, they spotted a small figure—a hopeful sign. It was Icky. Initially hesitant, he stood at a distance, unsure whether to approach.
However, the team gently coaxed him with familiar calls, and he slowly realized he was among friends. Overwhelmed with relief, Icky rushed forward, climbing into his foster mom’s lap, eager for the comfort of being back with those he trusted.

This heartfelt reunion was celebrated by SLAR on social media, expressing joy in having Icky back home safely. Although the ordeal was a setback in Icky’s progress, he continues to rebuild his confidence with the patient support of his foster family.
While he remains with his foster family for now, the goal is to find him a forever home that understands his unique needs and appreciates his gentle nature.
“He is looking for that forever home that will love him and continue to work with him,” said the SLAR team.
Despite his fears, Icky remains an affectionate dog whose true value shines through to those willing to see it.
