Some people mistakenly believe that animals don’t experience emotions, thinking they live purely on instinct without feeling love, grief, or joy. However, the truth is far different. We’ve all seen dogs bouncing with excitement, cats affectionately purring on their owners’ laps, and even birds showing affection towards humans. To illustrate this, here is a touching story about an animal’s resilience and compassion, sure to resonate with everyone.
Eve, an animal rescuer from Pups Without Borders, heard about a pregnant dog in a local shelter and decided to provide her with a safe and comfortable place for her pregnancy. When she picked up the dog, named Grace, Eve noticed she seemed unwell.
Eve told GeoBeats, “We took her to the vet who initially thought she was just carrying a very large litter.”
Eve’s original plan was to care for Grace until she gave birth, and then transfer her and her puppies to a loving foster home.
Sadly, plans didn’t unfold as expected. Grace tragically lost all her puppies.
Eve explained, “We tested Grace for safety precautions, which is standard for all our dogs, particularly pregnant ones. We found out Grace had canine herpes virus. It’s usually harmless for adult dogs but almost always fatal for puppies under three weeks.”
The rescue team was heartbroken, witnessing Grace’s sorrow over losing her puppies. Despite their efforts to cheer her up with walks, treats, and cuddles, Grace’s spirits remained low.
Then, a life-changing call came through. A non-profit organization reached out to say they had a litter of orphaned puppies who desperately needed care. Their mother had passed away, and they refused to eat.
Eve had a flash of inspiration. She knew Grace still had milk and thought introducing her to the orphaned puppies might help.
“We concluded that introducing them to Grace was their best chance,” Eve recalled. “It was 11 o’clock at night when they arrived; I rushed over, picked them up, and introduced them to Grace. She immediately started sniffing, wagging her tail, and nurturing them.”
In no time, Grace was lovingly caring for the puppies, who were desperately hungry. Over the following weeks, she mothered them as if they were her own, and soon they thrived. All the puppies found forever homes, thanks to their start with Grace.
Recognizing Grace’s amazing qualities as a nurturing mother, Eve decided to officially welcome her into their family by adopting her.
