After a life of nearly 13 years with his New Jersey family, Jake, a senior dog, faced abandonment as his owners prepared to move. Unfortunately, they could not take him along, leaving him with the grim possibility of euthanasia unless someone intervened to help.
Luckily, Uncle Neil’s Home, a farm sanctuary in New Jersey, stepped in to offer Jake a safe haven. Upon meeting him, they were heartbroken by the neglect he had suffered over the years.
The sanctuary’s founder, Rian Feldman, recounted the difficult situation to Newsweek. When she received a call about the urgent need to either rehome the 13-year-old dog or face euthanasia, she swiftly posted a plea on social media, seeking immediate help for Jake. Feldman expressed her distress upon learning about the dog’s potential fate and was driven to act quickly to find him a foster home.
Valerie and Chris, a compassionate couple from Maryland, responded to the call for help, agreeing to take Jake in. Arrangements were quickly made for Jake’s transition, during which the sanctuary witnessed the unfortunate state he lived in. Feldman described the owner’s brief farewell as “heartbreaking,” noting the dog’s various signs of neglect, including difficulty walking and overgrown nails.
Jake had endured severe neglect, facing challenges such as arthritis without supportive care, unchanged bed conditions, and significant health issues. Uncle Neil’s Home shared these details with their followers through a heartfelt Facebook post, highlighting Jake’s dire need for medical attention.
Within a day of arriving at the sanctuary, Jake experienced an outpouring of love and care that he had not known his entire life. Though his initial vet visit revealed numerous health concerns—including osteoarthritis, dental issues, and possible neurological deficits—the immediate start of treatment marked a turning point in his wellbeing.
Despite the long list of health issues, Jake’s spirit began to rekindle as he received necessary medical care and affection from his foster family. He required surgery for several conditions, including a mass and bladder stones, but he was on the path to recovery.
Jake underwent his first surgery and began to heal, finding happiness and comfort in his foster home. Feldman hopes for what she calls a “foster fail,” meaning his temporary caregivers might decide to adopt him permanently.
