Andrew Budek-Schmuisser, Peanut’s new owner, has been facing health challenges that frequently lead to loss of balance, putting him at risk of injury. A friend suggested that a large dog might offer the support and companionship Andrew needed, so he decided to visit the Albuquerque Animal Welfare Department. On March 9, 2024, he welcomed Peanut into his life.

Little did Andrew know, barely a day after adopting Peanut, this gentle giant would become his lifesaver.

Within just 24 hours, Peanut was called to action. Andrew had a severe fall, hitting his head and finding himself unable to move or breathe. His airway was compromised, creating a dangerous situation. Demonstrating incredible intuition, Peanut sprang into action.

Andrew shared with KRQE, “Then I felt Peanut come behind me. He cleared my airway by straightening my head and then got behind me and gradually pushed me into a sitting position.” Peanut’s quick response was crucial, and his actions showcased an understanding beyond what anyone could expect from a dog.

Following the incident, Peanut has remained a constant presence by Andrew’s side, offering protection and companionship. Andrew’s gratitude for his new furry friend is evident. “I love the dog with all my heart. He saved my life. There isn’t anything I wouldn’t do for him at this point,” he expressed, adding with a touch of humor, “I probably wouldn’t buy him a Ferrari ‘cause I don’t think he can drive one.”
