Many of us are familiar with the phrase “don’t judge a book by its cover,” a saying that often goes unnoticed in practice. This is especially true when it comes to adopting dogs, as many prospective pet owners are drawn to those that are healthy, clean, and irresistibly cute.
Unfortunately, this mindset overlooks the fact that a dog’s appearance is often a reflection of its treatment. Despite differences in appearance, all dogs share the same ability to bring joy and love to a family. This was certainly true for Luna, a sweet Pit Bull pup with a unique story.

Luna’s tale began when she arrived at a California animal rescue, catching the attention of many with an earnest appeal for her adoption. Surrendered at just seven weeks old due to a facial deformity, Luna struggled to eat and breathe properly. Her condition upon arriving at the shelter was heartbreaking, with a fractured skull and broken jaw. Initially, she faced the grim possibility of being euthanized that same day.
However, a nonprofit organization named Cage to Couch heard of Luna’s plight and intervened, changing her fate. Mary Pryor, a dedicated member of the rescue team, explained that Luna had never learned to breathe through her mouth and often fainted due to her difficulties in eating.
With the help of dedicated staff and the care she received at the University Veterinary Center, Luna’s condition gradually improved. Although she will require ongoing medical procedures, Pryor remains optimistic that someone will recognize Luna’s inner spirit and welcome her into their family.

In a conversation with Newsweek, Pryor elaborated on Luna’s challenges, including a serious nasal infection and a cleft palate that complicate her breathing and eating. The medical team decided it was best to delay surgeries until she grows older, as her jaw continues to develop and she copes with missing teeth.
Though Luna faces moments of anxiety, particularly at night when she struggles to breathe, the rescue team found simple yet effective ways to help her relax and rest. Despite these hardships, Luna’s spirited nature shines through. She’s a joyful puppy who loves running around and engaging with everyone she meets.
Luna currently resides with a foster family that includes two senior Beagles, both blind, and another dog fighting cancer. While she loves her foster siblings, Luna longs for a permanent home. Pryor believes Luna would thrive in a house with a fenced yard or on-leash walks. She adapts well to homes with other pets and is learning commands quickly.

Despite misconceptions about her breed and appearance, Pryor is committed to ensuring Luna becomes well-trained and socialized. She hopes the community will see past biases associated with Pit Bulls, acknowledging Luna’s loving demeanor.
In a spirited campaign, Luna is even nominated for America’s Favorite Pet, a contest that includes a feature in Modern Dog magazine and a prize, which would assist with her upcoming surgery costs.
Luna’s resilience and loving nature will surely help her find a family that appreciates her for who she truly is. Here’s to hoping Luna finds the forever home she so richly deserves. Good luck, Luna!
