On a freezing Valentine’s Day in Missouri, a group of volunteers from Stray Rescue of St. Louis (SRSL) stumbled upon an unexpected discovery when they found a 2-year-old pit bull chained to a dog house. With snow piling up and temperatures plunging, rescuers sprang into action to help the distressed dog.

Led by Donna Lochmann, the team approached the pup and uncovered a surprising secret inside the dog house: a litter of tiny puppies nestled against their mother for warmth. Discovering that the mother dog, later named Galentine, had given birth while living permanently outdoors, the team realized they now had a mission to save not just one but seven lives.

The team managed to coax Galentine out of the dog house and gently collected each of her puppies, carrying them safely to their vehicle. Galentine, understanding the intent of the rescuers, allowed them to remove her chain and willingly joined her puppies in the car.

According to Natalie Thomson, SRSL’s chief communications officer, Galentine instantly showed her gratitude. “She climbed on our laps in the Jeep to check on her puppies, ensuring they were all safe,” Thomson shared with The Dodo. For the first time, the little family felt warmth, and the puppies quickly fell asleep.

As Galentine and her babies arrived at SRSL’s headquarters, both she and the rescuers felt a sense of relief to have escaped the harsh cold. On Facebook, SRSL joyfully announced the successful rescue of Galentine and her puppies.

In their new shelter home, Galentine and her puppies—Serenade, Cherish, Flirt, Arrow, Amour, and Adore—settled into a cozy space filled with soft blankets and food. The affectionate Galentine constantly welcomed attention from the staff, showing her gratitude by climbing into laps and offering gentle kisses.

Over the following weeks, the puppies thrived under Galentine’s care, growing stronger and preparing for adoption. As the puppies awaited their forever homes, Galentine was one step ahead. Before St. Patrick’s Day, she found her perfect match with a family ready to welcome her into their lives at an adoption event.

Reflecting on Galentine’s journey from a snowy dog house to a warm home, Thomson expressed joy in the outcome: “We held a big adoption event, and she found her forever family!” After such a difficult start, Galentine’s newfound family felt almost dreamlike.

Now happily settled in her new home, SRSL hopes that Galentine’s puppies will soon find families of their own. Until then, the rescue team cherishes the heartwarming story of the little family they helped save. “At just 2 years old, Galentine is practically a puppy herself,” SRSL noted on Facebook. “She will no longer face loneliness or cold, only love and respect in her forever home.”
