In August 2018, the Orr family from Kansas experienced a tragic event during what was meant to be a peaceful summer getaway. Jennifer Orr and her daughter, Sam, were in a severe accident while traveling in their Jeep, which plummeted 600 feet down a mountain road in Chaffee County, Colorado. Tragically, Jennifer did not survive the crash.

Accompanying them was Bentley, their one-year-old Goldendoodle. In the midst of their grief, the family clung to the hope that Bentley might still be alive. It seemed unlikely that a dog could endure the harsh mountain conditions for weeks, yet Bentley managed to survive against the odds.

The previous year, in 2017, Samantha Orr had returned home from studying abroad with a newfound goal of getting a dog. Despite her family’s reservations, Sam brought Bentley into their lives shortly after returning to the U.S., and he quickly became her adventurous companion. However, a year later, their lives were turned upside down.

During an outing on a rugged off-road trail, disaster struck as the family’s Jeep crashed. Sam was hospitalized, and Bentley went missing. In response, the community rallied together, distributing flyers and organizing search efforts. The accident received widespread attention, and people held onto the hope of finding Bentley safe and sound. Unfortunately, some individuals tried to exploit the situation with false information.

Nineteen days following the accident, a man named Joe spotted Bentley not far from the crash site, reigniting hope for Sam. Bentley had survived by eating rock mice and stayed near the wreckage, perhaps waiting for his family’s return. Determined to bring Bentley home, Sam embarked on a challenging hike to the accident site.

Despite her injuries, Sam scaled the mountain with determination and love for Bentley. When she finally saw him, Bentley approached cautiously. Using techniques she had researched, Sam gradually earned his trust and coaxed him into her embrace.

The reunion between Sam and Bentley was an emotional one. Although Bentley was dehydrated and hungry, he was otherwise unharmed. The descent back down the mountain was much easier with Bentley by her side, finally on his way home to Kansas.

Back at home, Bentley initially showed signs of trauma, guarding his food protectively. However, over time, he started to relax and recover from the ordeal. The Orr family, while still mourning the loss of Jennifer, found solace in Bentley’s return. They also welcomed a new puppy named Buena, in memory of their experience in Buena Vista, Colorado.

Sam expressed her emotions on her website, sharing, “We’ve also added another fur baby to the family, ‘Buena’, his little sister named in honor of everything our family endured in Buena Vista, Colorado. I wish my mom were here today to meet little miss Buena, she would absolutely steal my mother’s heart. And I know for damn sure my mom would be so proud of Bentley and I.”

Today, Bentley leads a happy life with Sam and Buena, bringing warmth and joy to their home despite their past sorrows. The Orr family cherishes their memories of Jennifer while finding happiness with their beloved pets. We wish them peace and joy as they continue to honor Jennifer’s spirit.
