These young elephants’ journey begins after enduring tragic events that leave them without their parents. But from the moment they are rescued, a remarkable path unfolds, requiring unwavering commitment and care.

These orphaned pachyderms’ initial refuge is our Nairobi or Kaluku Nursery, where they find solace and healing.
Their stories vary – some lost their families to poaching or human conflicts, while others were abandoned during harsh droughts.
Despite their diverse backgrounds, they all find a new family within our nurseries, setting the stage for their future.
Under the attentive guidance of their Keepers, these infant elephants receive round-the-clock care and affection.
These young ones, craving emotional support, lean on their Keepers for comfort and companionship.
From warm milk bottles to soothing company at bedtime, the Keepers ensure their every need is met.
As these orphans mature, they gradually take on parental roles themselves. Some emerge as nurturing figures, caring for their younger peers, while others become mentors, guiding their companions toward strength and confidence. Together, they learn the ways of the wild, adapting as nature intended.
Eventually, every orphan reaches a stage where they outgrow the Nursery. Whether seeking new challenges or craving independence, the time comes for them to move forward.
This transition leads them to one of our Reintegration Units – Voi, Ithumba, or Umani Springs, strategically located within Kenya’s elephant territories.
At these units, the orphans embark on a journey toward independence, guided by their Keepers. Like human teenagers, they strive for autonomy but still seek solace from their caregivers.
The transition from dependency to wild living is carefully navigated, marking a pivotal moment in their lives.
However, their connection with their human caregivers endures even after returning to the wild. Elephants, like humans, cherish family bonds, and these orphans remember the love and care they received.
It’s heartening to witness their occasional return visits, often accompanied by their offspring, born and thriving in the wild.
As we celebrate World Elephant Day, we reflect on the challenges faced by these majestic creatures. Despite progress in combating poaching, new threats emerge, leading to a surge in orphaned elephants needing our care.
Climate change exacerbates habitat loss, intensifying human-wildlife conflicts and resource competition.
Yet, thanks to generous supporters, we can continue providing these orphans with the care they deserve.
