In collaboration with Amnesty International, Hollywood star Angelina Jolie has authored a book to empower children worldwide with the tools to assert their rights.
Titled “Know Your Rights and Claim Them,” the book, co-written with human rights lawyer Geraldine Van Bueren, seeks to equip children with knowledge to advocate for themselves against injustices.
Jolie hoped the book would provide children with the means to challenge violations of their rights, stating, “So many children are in harm’s way across the world, and we’re simply not doing enough.”
She emphasized that these rights, established years ago, are essential for children’s well-being and stability as they grow into adulthood.
As a special envoy for the UN refugee agency UNHCR, Jolie also sees the book as a reminder to governments of their commitment to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which encompasses children’s civil, social, political, and economic rights.
The book is a practical guide for children to understand their rights and identify obstacles to accessing them. Jolie explained, “It’s a handbook to fight back,” urging children to be informed activists while prioritizing their safety.
Highlighting real-life examples, the book features influential young voices such as Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai, climate activist Greta Thunberg, and 15-year-old Palestinian journalist Janna Jihad.
During a video call with Jolie and other activists, Jihad shared her experiences living in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.
Jolie stressed the importance of solidarity among young people in effecting change, echoing the sentiments of London-based activist Christina Adane, who emphasized the power of collective action.
The book addresses various issues, including identity, justice, education, and protection from harm, providing practical guidance and resources for young activists. It encourages children to find their paths forward while ensuring their safety.
“Know Your Rights and Claim Them” is set for release in Britain, with plans for global publication. Jolie expressed optimism that children worldwide would find ways to access the book, even in countries where it may face opposition.
In addition to her humanitarian efforts, Jolie will soon appear in the Marvel movie “The Eternals” alongside Salma Hayek.
