Everything feels new and thrilling for a young animal, and this baby elephant’s first mud bath was no exception.

“Well, that was one way to do it,” remarked wildlife cameraman Gordon Buchanan. Fortunately, Gawa was unhurt and soon enjoying her first bath with the help of her caring nannies.
Across the mud pool, another baby elephant named Weaver confidently showcased her new skills. “Compared to Gawa, Weaver is looking strong and confident,” noted Gordon.

Feeling bold, Weaver attempted a challenging exit by climbing a steep hill. With some assistance from her nannies, she eventually succeeded.
Inspired by her friend, Gawalso decided to leave the mall. But the slick surface proved tricky, and she started slipping. “At this age, she has limited energy reserves,” explained Gordon. “Baby elephants can perish stuck in the mud.”
The adults were unsure how to help. Thankfully, one of the handlers, Benjamin, guided them to an alternative route.

Thanks to their quick thinking, this potentially dangerous situation became a cherished memory. “That is one very happy, very muddy baby elephant,” said Gordon.
