The fire-tailed sunbird (Aethopyga ignicauda) stands out as a striking and unmistakable bird with its vibrant red tail.

Measuring about 16 cm in length, this small bird is adorned with a brilliant flame-red nape, mantle, and long tail that features distinctive red upper tail coverts, which is how it gets its name. Its breast and belly showcase a blend of yellow and red streaks.

The female of the species has a slightly different appearance, with an orange-yellow hue on her belly and brownish-orange tail sides.

Native to regions across Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal, and Thailand, the fire-tailed sunbird thrives in temperate forests as well as sub-tropical or tropical moist montane forests.

These birds primarily feed on nectar but will also eat insects when possible. While the breeding habits of the fire-tailed sunbird, particularly in the Himalayan and Hengduan Mountains, are not well documented, we know that the nestling phase lasts around 19.5 days.

Both males and females contribute to feeding their young, though females take on a larger share of this task. Compared to sunbirds living at lower altitudes, fire-tailed sunbirds invest more in their offspring by laying fewer eggs and offering greater parental care.
