Anhingas, or Anhinga anhinga, are commonly found in freshwater wetlands throughout the southeastern United States and parts of Central and South America. Although they resemble cormorants, Anhingas can easily be identified by their slender bills and elongated tails in flight.
While swimming, these birds sit lower in the water than cormorants, revealing only their necks, leading to their nickname, the “snakebird.” It is often seen that Anhingas and cormorants bask together in the sun with their wings spread wide.

Watching Anhingas’ enchanting courtship rituals and nesting behaviors provides a fascinating look into the complexity of avian life. Their elegant dances and cooperative efforts highlight the beauty and diversity found in nature, especially during the vibrant bird breeding season.
