The Elephant Nature Park witnessed a truly touching scene as newborn baby elephant DokRak took his first steps into the world. Just hours old, the calf was lovingly guided by his mother, Dok Ngern, and the supportive herd to nurse for the very first time—a vital milestone in his journey of life.
Elephants are inherently social animals, and their bonds are remarkably strong. In their natural habitats, a mother giving birth is never alone; she is surrounded by close family members or friends who assist in ensuring the newborn’s safety and survival.

From the moment a calf is born, responsibilities are shared among the herd. This includes protecting the vulnerable newborn from potential predators and helping it adapt to its new environment.
DokRak’s experience was no different. The herd came together to ensure his survival, with a dedicated nanny elephant playing a critical role.
Using her trunk and legs, the nanny carefully guided DokRak to find the mother’s nipple and encouraged him to nurse—a crucial act to build his strength in his first hours of life. This beautiful moment highlighted the profound empathy and cooperation within elephant families.
Sadly, life for many elephants in captivity starkly contrasts with this scene of compassion. Captive mother elephants are often forced to give birth in isolation, shackled and surrounded by unnatural noise and light.
In some heartbreaking cases, calves are separated from their mothers soon after birth due to the fear that the stressed mothers might harm their young. This separation often denies both mother and calf the natural bond and care they deserve.
However, moments like DokRak’s first nursing offer hope and a glimpse into the remarkable social and emotional intelligence of elephants. The love and care shown by his mother and the herd remind us of the importance of fostering environments where elephants can thrive naturally, even in sanctuaries.
As DokRak continues to grow under the watchful eyes of his herd, his story serves as a testament to the resilience and beauty of elephant family bonds. It also underscores the vital role of sanctuaries like Elephant Nature Park in providing these magnificent creatures with the opportunity to live in safety and harmony, reflecting the lives they were meant to lead.
