A breathtaking video showcases a lioness guiding her cubs to a waterhole at night, capturing a rare glimpse of these majestic creatures in their natural habitat.
In the footage, a lioness confidently approaches the water, followed closely by her playful cubs and a male lion.
Freelance wildlife photographer Peter Haygarth captured this remarkable scene at the Zimanga Private Game Reserve in South Africa.
Haygarth skillfully highlighted the intensity of the lioness’s gaze against the night backdrop, showcasing the stunning contrast between the golden hues of their fur and the striking yellow-green glow of their eyes.
To capture these extraordinary images, the 55-year-old photographer spent over 15 hours in a hide, from 2 PM to 5 AM, waiting for the perfect moment.
His dedication paid off, as he recorded this rare spectacle without using a flash or specialized lighting equipment.
Instead, he relied on LED spotlights to gently illuminate the hide and the water, enhancing the regal appearance of the lions as they drank under the cover of darkness.
Located in the heart of the Zululand bushveld, Zimanga Private Game Reserve is near Mkuze and boasts a rich diversity of wildlife.
Home to over 80 mammal species, including cheetahs, leopards, elephants, rhinos, and buffalo, the reserve offers a unique experience for wildlife enthusiasts.
