In heartwarming news, Paignton Zoo in Devon, England, celebrates the recent arrival of a precious zebra. Born on July 18, this newborn Hartmann zebra holds a special place in the hearts of conservationists as the species is classified as vulnerable.
The foal’s proud parents are Taru, the mother, and Jabali, the 19-year-old father who was also born at Paignton Zoo. Jabali, a newcomer to the zoo, joined the family in December 2019.
Lisa Britton, the zoo’s curator of mammals, expressed her excitement: “This new addition is a significant milestone.
The Hartmann zebra is classified as vulnerable due to a declining population, making this birth a great achievement for Paignton Zoo and the species as a whole.”
Also known as mountain zebras, these unique creatures are native to West Africa. They possess distinct physical characteristics, with narrow stripes adorning their neck and body that gradually widen towards the rear.
Stripes extend down their legs to their hooves and boast a distinctive fold of skin hanging from their throat, setting them apart from other zebra species.
In addition to their striking appearance, Hartmann zebras exhibit remarkable abilities. They are skilled climbers, navigating rugged terrains with their hard, pointed hooves. Each zebra’s stripes are entirely unique, like a fingerprint, adding to their individuality and charm.
Unlike their counterparts, Hartmann zebras do not form large herds. Instead, they prefer smaller groups known as breeding herds, where they settle for several years.
Their active lifestyle primarily unfolds during the daytime, particularly early morning. During winter, they seek refuge in wooded areas or caves, leveraging their exceptional night vision comparable to an owl’s.
The gestation period for Hartmann zebras lasts between 364 and 391 days, culminating in the birth of a foal. The newborn foal will remain close to her mother’s side for at least ten months until she is fully weaned.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Red List designates the Hartmann mountain zebra as a vulnerable species, underscoring the importance of conservation efforts.
Each successful birth brings hope for the future of these magnificent animals and highlights the critical role that zoos like Paignton Zoo play in safeguarding endangered species.
