In the heart of Sri Lanka’s Kalawewa National Park, an endearing scene unfolded as a lively young elephant embarked on a playful adventure, climbing atop its larger companion for a jumbo-sized piggyback ride.
Captured through the lens of photographer Pathum Bandara, these heartwarming images showcase the calf’s mischievous spirit as it joyfully mounted its friend, seemingly flashing a playful smile in the process.
Immersed in observing a magnificent herd of over 200 elephants, Bandara shared his experience, stating, “Baby elephants are known for their spirited playfulness, and amidst the group’s dynamics, I came across this delightful pair engaged in some friendly antics.”
He noted, “The smaller elephant appeared to be orchestrating a clever attempt at a free ride, resting comfortably upon its companion. The twinkle in its eye seemed to beckon in my direction, adding to the moment’s charm.”
At 34 years old, Bandara’s artistry shines through in this exceptional shot, where he skillfully captures the duo with a candid, unobstructed gaze.
His dedication to his craft is evident as he humbly expresses, “Moments like these, frozen in time with such clarity, remind me of why I feel privileged to be behind the camera.”
