Against All Odds: Mbila and Zongo’s Inspiring Journey Back to the Wild

Last Update:

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, two young elephants embarked on an extraordinary journey across Zambia after being rescued from a human-elephant conflict.

Three years later, Mbila and Zongo’s incredible tale continues as they reunite with the wild at Kafue National Park, marking a significant milestone in their rehabilitation journey.

At the ages of 3 years and six months and three years and five months, Mbila and Zongo transitioned to the Kafue Release Facility to integrate into a more significant release herd.

This move aimed to familiarize them with herd dynamics, refine their foraging skills, and introduce them to their new home environment.

The strong bond between the two elephants, nurtured since their rescue, comforted them during this crucial step.

On the momentous day of their release, a team gathered at the Elephant Nursery. Mbila and Zongo were darted by DNPW vet Dr. Chadzaantso Phiri, ensuring their safe transportation to Kafue National Park.

Despite the challenge of loading two elephants weighing over 670 kg each, the team worked diligently to transfer them into a wildlife truck for the 400km journey.

Regular stops along the way provided the elephants with milk, electrolytes, and reassurance from their devoted Keepers, Sunday and Miyanda.

Despite the inherent stress of travel, Mbila and Zongo remained relatively calm, engaging in browsing activities during breaks.

Upon arrival at the release facility, Mbila and Zongo initially hesitated to exit the truck. With gentle coaxing from their nursery keepers, they eventually descended into the boma, greeted with milk bottles and the welcome presence of the KRF herd.

Olimba and Ludaka, former mates from the Nursery, exhibited recognition towards Mbila and Zongo, extending their trunks in acknowledgment.
