In a remarkable encounter, a massive bear broke into a house in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, and adventurously attempted to escape through an upstairs window.
The bear’s escapade was first noticed by a neighbor, who captured much of the event on video. Heidi Hannah, aware that her neighbor was not home, immediately alerted the police when she saw the bear enter the greenhouse.

The bear gained entry by tearing through a downstairs window, roaming through the house, and then trying to exit via an upstairs window. The bear swung from the window for several minutes, contemplating a drop to the ground before deciding it was too far.
It then swung back inside and exited the house the same way it came in, retreating into the woods. Homeowner Ryan MacFarlane discovered the intrusion while at work. He described how the bear “got his nails in there and ripped that window open.
“The bear helped itself to MacFarlane’s pork chops and snacks from the pantry and even knocked over some plants. MacFarlane found the damage minor despite the chaos and expressed gratitude that the bear was a relatively “respectful house guest.”
While inside, the bear also managed to lock itself in a bathroom for a brief period. A Colorado Parks and Wildlife representative explained that bears are particularly active during fall as they prepare for winter.
Bears are opportunistic feeders, often seeking the easiest and most filling food sources. To prevent such intrusions, residents are advised to secure trash bins, keep windows and doors closed, and ensure that food sources are not easily accessible to wildlife.
Additional recommendations include thoroughly cleaning barbecue grills after use, picking fruit before it ripens, and removing any scented items from vehicles. By following these practices, homeowners can reduce the likelihood of unexpected visits from hungry bears.
