Understanding that a public shelter might not be the best place for him, she reached out to a rescue organization instead of notifying animal control.
Hope for Paws responded to the call with urgency and arrived at the junkyard to rescue Duncan.
Although the rescuers offered him more food, it became clear that Duncan, confused and disoriented, needed to be taken to a safer place as soon as possible.
Gently wrapping a leash around his neck, the rescuers guided the elderly and sick dog from his hiding spot.
Once Duncan was out, the extent of his neglect was evident. A rope around his neck suggested that someone had once been responsible for him but had failed in their duty of care.
As he settled in the car on the way to the veterinarian, Duncan welcomed the affection from his rescuers, perhaps experiencing love for the first time in a long while.
The vet’s examination revealed that Duncan was not only blind but also suffering from exhaustion, a skin disease, ulcers, and tumors.
Although the recommendation was to euthanize him to end his suffering, his rescuers felt he deserved a chance at life filled with love and care after enduring years of neglect.
Recognizing that Duncan required specialized care, Hope for Paws turned to the Frosted Faces Foundation, which focuses on fostering senior dogs. The foundation quickly agreed to take Duncan under its wing and placed him in a loving foster home.
The change in environment soon led to a remarkable transformation in Duncan, who began to thrive under the warmth and attention of his foster family.
Despite living with dementia, Duncan adapted well to his new surroundings, enjoying cuddles and the comfort of being part of a family.
While he occasionally experiences moments of confusion, his foster family is always there to provide the reassurance and love he needs. Today, Duncan’s future may be uncertain, but he finally enjoys the love and care every dog deserves.
