A heartwarming rescue story unfolded in Regina, Saskatchewan, where transit workers sprang into action to save a dog found shivering in the bone-chilling cold at a bus stop this week. Thanks to their prompt response, the dog is now safe and sound.

A vigilant bus passenger first noticed the distressed animal at a city bus stop amid the frigid weather that has gripped the region with record-low temperatures. Sensing the urgency, Darren Szabo, a transportation officer in Regina, quickly arrived at the scene, determined to keep the dog warm until help arrived from the Regina Humane Society (RHS).

Szabo shared with Global News his concern for the dog’s wellbeing, explaining, “In this severe cold, mere minutes could spell the difference between saving his ears or paws from frostbite.” Initially nervous, the dog growled at Szabo, yet became calmer once he realized Szabo meant no harm and wrapped him in a fleece jacket for warmth.

She noted, “It was unusual for him to go missing, so his family quickly contacted us.”

Despite the frigid ordeal, the dog recovered completely without any signs of harm from the cold.

Regina has a Safe Bus Programme in place to assist individuals who might be caught in extreme weather. Commuters can signal a bus to stop and offer shelter. Reiterating the program’s purpose, Szabo highlighted the importance of extending help to both people and animals during harsh conditions. Regina Transit shared a photo of the dog alongside this message, urging everyone to stay safe and warm against the bitter cold snap, and emphasizing that the well-being of pets should be a priority too.
