When dogs get curious, their adventures can sometimes lead them into unexpected trouble.
This was the case with Rilee, a dog from Placerville, California, who wandered into an abandoned mine shaft on her family’s property and fell into a deep pit, sparking a dramatic rescue operation.
Rilee’s owner, Kimberlee Adams Norwood Mickelson, acted quickly after the accident, immediately seeking help despite her distress.

The El Dorado County Fire Protection District promptly responded to her call for assistance and soon arrived on the scene to begin the rescue.
The firefighters found that Rilee had plummeted 60 feet after walking nearly 200 yards into the forgotten mine.
According to Jacob Poganski, a captain with the El Dorado County Fire Protection District, while they had conducted similar rescues before, this particular situation was uniquely challenging.

The team carefully mapped out their plan, acknowledging the dangers involved but confident in their training.
In a Facebook post detailing the mission, they explained that the crews conducted a confined space entry with a specially trained rescuer lowered down using ropes.
Initially, Rilee was nervous, but her demeanor changed markedly upon realizing that help was at hand. Poganski described how Rilee became calm and friendly once the rescuer neared, easing the task of securing her in a harness for the ascent.

Thanks to Rilee’s calm cooperation and the team’s meticulous work, the rescue was completed smoothly.
Once back above ground, Rilee was safe and in good spirits, greeting her rescuers with wagging enthusiasm, apparently thanking them for their efforts.
Rilee was incredibly fortunate, sustaining only minor injuries from her ordeal. Kimberlee was relieved and immensely grateful to the rescue team.

On Facebook, she expressed her heartfelt thanks, emphasizing how grateful she was for the firefighters’ dedication and courage. “Miracles do happen! She’s ALIVE!!!” she exclaimed.
For the firefighters, ensuring Rilee’s safety and witnessing Kimberlee’s joy made all the effort worthwhile. The successful rescue underscored their commitment to safeguarding both human and animal lives, regardless of the challenges involved.
