In Kenya, where about 30,000 elephants face numerous daily threats, this tragic situation is too common.

A spokesperson for the DSWT explained that their goal is to ensure these vulnerable animals become solid and self-sufficient enough to return to the wild, both physically and emotionally.

He added, “Many of these orphans have lost their mothers due to human actions, experiencing emotional and often physical pain at a very young age. Our responsibility is to nurture and care for them so they survive and thrive back in the wild.”

Dame Daphne Sheldrick founded the DSWT in 1977 to honor her late husband. She pioneered developing the milk formula and care techniques necessary for hand-rearing orphaned elephant calves. Today, her daughter runs the trust, caring for hundreds of baby elephants across Kenya.

The spokesperson revealed, “Our Orphans’ Projects provide hope and healing for these traumatized young elephants.

Our human carers work around the clock to replace the orphans’ lost herds, offering love, protection, and care 24/7, just as their mothers would have.”
