In a dramatic encounter on the Serengeti savannah, an enraged elephant chased a lioness up a tree, highlighting a rare power struggle between these two formidable animals.
The incident began when the lioness ventured into the elephant’s territory, triggering the large grey beast to pursue her aggressively.

This chase led to a dramatic scene in the Central Serengeti, where the lioness sought refuge in a tree while the determined elephant attempted to reach her from below.
Dalida and Andrew Innes, a couple from Sydney, Australia, captured the thrilling chase on film during their safari in Tanzania.

The lioness had become separated from her pride, busy feasting on a recent kill when the pursuit began.
“We were observing a pride of lions enjoying their recent kill when we noticed a herd of elephants gathering around a tree with a lioness perched in it. She seemed to have strayed from the pride we were watching,” recounted Mrs. Innes, 41.
Without warning, the lioness bolted for safety, pursued by one of the elephants. The chase covered a considerable distance until the lioness climbed another tree to escape her persistent pursuer.

The lioness roared desperately throughout the ordeal, calling out for her pride’s assistance. The elephant repeatedly tried to grab the lioness by her tail with its trunk but narrowly missed each time.
Eventually, the elephant abandoned the pursuit, allowing the lioness to descend from the tree and rejoin her cubs.
The reasons behind the elephant’s aggressive behavior remain unclear. It may have been driven by a desire to protect its herd’s young or assert its dominance in the area.

Although lions are often called the ‘king of the savannah,’ they stand little chance against an angry elephant, making the lioness’s choice to climb the tree wise.
This rare and captivating encounter showcased these incredible creatures’ raw power and instinctive behaviors, leaving the Innes couple and other safari-goers in awe of nature’s wonders.
