Guests at the pool.
Have you ever sat quietly by the pool, enjoying some relaxing time? I’m not sure about you, but seeing these massive creatures approaching me would probably make me “lose my temper”.
Pretty sure I would run away for the safety of my tent if I were in this position. While I’m not sure exactly to what extent a tent will protect me from one of these African Elephants, they weigh between 5,000-14,000 pounds each.
How big is this herd?
Initially, these tent campers at Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe seemed delighted to see the elephants up close. However, when vacationers see how many people come to join them at their pool, you can quickly see the excitement turn to awe and perhaps fear.
The whole herd comes.
It doesn’t take long for most of the elephant herd to reach the pool. This herd of elephants is larger than most. An average herd consists of 9-11, although you can easily count about 20 in this herd.
In this video, you can clearly see who is the matriarch of the herd. She made eye contact with one of the holiday guests and didn’t take her eyes off him the whole time. She is trying to gauge if her herd is in danger and if this group of people can be trusted. I thought her deep stare would be scary, but this vacationer doesn’t look scary at all.
For the elephant herds, girl power is key! Male elephants have been pushed away during their teenage years, and female elephants will continue to bond for life. It is said that although male elephants lead a more solitary life, they usually never roam too far from their original herd.
As the matriarch continues to observe the vacationers carefully, you can look her straight in the eye, as if you were looking straight into a pool of wits. Their tender eyes have such stories to tell. Those elephant eyes make it easy for tourists to trust these gentle giants, as you can see in the video, as no one seems to be the most scared the entire time they’re drinking.
Posing for the cameras.
These elephants seem to be so grateful for the water they are allowed to drink at this pool that they appear to be lining up and posing so holidaymakers can take pictures of them. The cameras don’t scare off this majestic herd at all.
“Hey guys, wait for me!”
When the elephants finish quenching their thirst, they begin to leave. They know that water is scarce, and wisdom shines when they drink what they need and then move on. Do not waste, do not want. We can learn a lesson from these elephants.
Just as they all seem to be over, this little one runs in seemingly out of nowhere. We all know that a person is always a few steps behind. So the group waits patiently for her to finish before they all move on.
Check that water level!
Did you notice how far the water level in the pool dropped after the elephant finished drinking? I was amazed by how visible the difference was. I shouldn’t have been surprised because an adult elephant can drink up to 50 gallons of water a day! No wonder the water level dropped markedly.
This amazing video is sure to make you smile. These elephants are absolutely majestic and breathtaking.
