Holidaymaker Julie Lindenmayer, who took the photo, said: ‘I think the elephant was initially interested in his friend.
“He was poking it with its trunk as it was trying to see if it was okay, and when there was no response, it just sat down.
“We were all a little worried about the one laying down. We thought it might be sick or injured, but when it got up, it ate some grass and looked fine. ”
Working as a zookeeper, Lindenmayer saw a lot of wildlife, but the sight of an elephant perched on its friend left her in awe.
Lindenmayer, from Miami, Florida, added: ‘A sight like this is something that will stay with me for a lifetime.
“It’s easy to forget how lucky you are to see them so often, but seeing these animals in their natural habitat is an incredible feeling – especially when they display such an astonishing behaviour.”
