In a remarkable display of bravery, a gnu faced down a cheetah in a tense standoff near the Masai Mara River in Kenya.
Rather than running from the predator, the gnu boldly stood its ground, even charging directly at the surprised cheetah.
Captured by photographer Vadim Onishchenko, 34, the encounter stunned the cheetah as it backed away from the unexpected confrontation.
“It had been a quiet safari until we spotted the cheetah trying to bring the gnu down,” Onishchenko said. “The two locked eyes, waiting for the other to make a move. I was amazed at how aggressive the gnu was, catching the cheetah off guard.”
Onishchenko described the moment as a “hunter becomes the hunted” situation, with the gnu turning the tables on its would-be attacker.
Though the cheetah missed out on a meal, it was a close call for the gnu, whose fearless response likely saved its life.
“Nature is incredible,” the photographer added. “You never know what you’re going to witness, and that unpredictability makes my job so exciting.”
