Caring for a pet with special needs can be a daunting task, which not all pet owners are ready to undertake.
Sadly, this reluctance often results in abandoned animals, as was the case with Lunetta, an endearing little dog left tied to a railing on the streets of Salta, Argentina.
A local dog care facility staff member was shocked to find Lunetta in distress. Her back legs were bound to a rusty wheelchair, and she was helplessly lying on the pavement without any food or water nearby.
Beside her was a bag of diapers and a note providing her name, age, and a sorrowful explanation that her owners were no longer able to look after her.
The rescue organization Luba Salta was promptly informed, and two volunteers immediately arrived to assess Lunetta’s condition and bring her to safety.
After being placed in a foster home, her story was posted on Facebook to help find a family willing to give a paralyzed dog the care she needed.
Not long after, an American family came forward to adopt her. Initially, this seemed like a happy ending, but they were soon overwhelmed by the extent of care Lunetta required.
This neglect resulted in Lunetta developing a severe staph infection, causing a rapid decline in her health.
As her situation grew dire once more, another American family stepped up, offering the love and medical attention Lunetta needed. Under their care, Lunetta made a remarkable recovery, finally experiencing the joy of a loving home.
Her new life was filled with happiness—a canine sister to play with, a custom-made wheelchair granting her mobility, and a variety of exciting adventures.
She reveled in park outings, snowy playtimes, and even celebrated Christmas with her family.
However, time inevitably caught up with her. Just a month after celebrating her 11th birthday, Lunetta became ill and was urgently admitted to the intensive care unit at the University Medical Hospital.
Despite her valiant fight, Lunetta passed away, comforted by the presence of those who loved her.
Her adoptive mother expressed her grief on Facebook: “I will never forget her and how much she meant to me. She changed my life forever. I loved her so much.”
Although Lunetta’s journey concluded, her last year was filled with the love and joy she always deserved. Her story is a poignant reminder that every dog, regardless of their condition, deserves a chance at happiness.
