To an untrained eye, it seemed like just another piece of street litter—a soggy cardboard box left by the sidewalk. However, one Missouri resident felt compelled to take a closer look, driven by an inexplicable intuition.
As she peered into the box, her heart skipped a beat; nestled inside was the fragile figure of a puppy, curled tightly and barely breathing.
Despite the chilly air and the puppy’s frail body, the woman gently lifted him from the box, wiping raindrops from her glasses. This simple act of kindness transformed a scene of despair into one of hope and survival.

The story unfolded when Stray Rescue of St. Louis (SRSL) received an urgent call from this concerned citizen who had stumbled upon the puppy.
She described finding an emaciated pup barely clinging to life and pleaded for immediate assistance. The rescue team responded without delay, arriving swiftly to transport the struggling animal to a veterinary clinic.
Upon seeing the puppy, later named Renlo, rescuers were struck by his critical condition. His body was so cold that its temperature was unrecordable.

The team sprang into action, using heating pads, warm fluids, and a device called a bear hugger to raise his temperature. Despite their swift efforts, warming him proved to be a challenge.
As a next step, Renlo was moved to an overnight care facility where he could receive round-the-clock attention. Miraculously, by morning he had shown enough improvement to begin a treatment plan.
Within three days, Renlo surprised everyone by standing on his own, signaling a significant turn in his recovery journey.

Recognizing his limited mobility, rescuers allowed time for Renlo to rest and regain his strength gradually. His rehabilitation started with short walks and a controlled diet to help him regain weight.
As Renlo’s condition stabilized, he was placed with a medical foster family who provided him with the care and environment he needed to thrive.

Under their watchful eyes, Renlo began forming new habits and adjusting to life in a home setting. Although still underweight, he is on the path to a full recovery, receiving all necessary care.
With ongoing support, it is hoped that, in a few months, Renlo will be healthy enough to find a forever home, marking the beginning of a bright new chapter in his life.
