From Hisses to Happiness: Cat Transforms After Finding His Forever Home

Big Ben, a cat who had spent years fending for himself as a community stray, only knew how to hiss when he arrived at a shelter.

But his life changed dramatically when someone opened their home to him, allowing his true personality to shine.

Having lived under a school for much of his life, Big Ben had become a fixture in the neighborhood, cared for by kind-hearted people who ensured he had food.

His distinct “football cheeks” and waddle-like walk made him look like a character from a cartoon, as described by the Exploits Valley SPCA.

They were determined to find him a loving home, believing he deserved more than his life as a stray.

When Big Ben arrived at the shelter, he was frightened and withdrawn, spending his days huddled in a corner of his kennel, wary of everyone around him.

His constant hissing hinted at his fear, but the staff knew there was a loving cat beneath that tough exterior.

They also discovered he was positive for FIV, a condition that meant he could still live a healthy life but would need to stay indoors to ensure his well-being.

As the days passed, potential adopters came and went, often choosing younger cats or kittens. With his sad expression and nervous demeanor, Big Ben was repeatedly overlooked. His depression deepened, and his already sorrowful face became even more forlorn.

The staff, however, didn’t give up hope. They continued sharing his story, confident that the right family would come along eventually.

Then, one day, the shelter received the application they’d been waiting for. Amber, who had come across Big Ben’s story, felt an instant connection and knew she was meant to give him a home.

Before she heard back from the shelter, she began preparing a special room for him, filled with soft blankets and cozy beds.

Within days, Big Ben left the shelter for good, heading to his new home with Amber. The once anxious cat began to feel at ease, eating comfortably and exploring his new surroundings.

Amber provided him with more comfort than he had ever known, and soon, his sad expression was replaced by a more contented one.

Now, four months after his adoption, Big Ben is a different cat. “He’s come such a long way,” Amber shared in an update.

“He used never to leave his room or make a sound, just hiss. Now he loves to chat with me—it’s like he’s answering my questions.”

Ben also formed a bond with the family dog, Max. The two have grown more comfortable around each other, and their friendship blossoms each day.

Watching Big Ben relax and enjoy life has brought joy to both Amber and the shelter staff who remember his difficult beginnings.

The SPCA reflected on his transformation: “It’s heartwarming to see him now, sitting comfortably on the couch when he barely used to move at the shelter. His story reminds us that every bit of effort we put into helping these animals is worth it.”
