Helping dogs is more than just a job. It’s a lifelong commitment. For those who open their hearts to these faithful animals, there’s no turning back.
Jill Henke, who works as the operations director at Gateway Pet Guardians in St. Louis, Illinois, can attest to this. Despite her many years of involvement in animal rescue, each encounter leaves a lasting impact on her.
Earlier this year, a new stray dog caught her attention. There was no barking or crying—just an expressive, silent plea in the animal’s eyes.

Jill attempted to approach the dog, but it ran off, and she assumed their paths wouldn’t cross again. However, fate intervened.
While delivering cat food to a local center in Washington Park, Illinois, she spotted the dog once more, gazing at her from across a field. A volunteer informed Jill that the dog had been sneaking in for food.
Seeing the poor condition of the dog—dirty, thin, and scared—Jill knew she had to help, especially with the cold weather making survival difficult.
She named the dog Bon Bon and made several attempts to connect with her, but each effort failed as Bon Bon remained elusive.

As weeks passed, a neighbor reported seeing a dog sleeping inside an abandoned house nearby. The team from Gateway Pet Guardians acted quickly and discovered Bon Bon lounging on a worn-out couch inside the house.
Initially hesitant and confused by the leash, Bon Bon soon understood she was safe. Sharing this moment on Facebook, the GPG team wrote, “At first, Bon Bon was fearful when we leashed her, but it didn’t take long for her sweet personality to come out and shine.”
After her rescue, Bon Bon thrived at the GPG facility in St. Louis. Her lively and goofy nature quickly emerged. As the GPG team shared, “When she’s not catching ZZZZs on the couch, you can find her being an absolute ham, bringing smiles to everyone’s faces…

Bon Bon Girl serves as an excellent reminder that life is short, and we should laugh as much as possible. Beyond her goofball nature, she is just such a good girl.”
Now at three years old, Bon Bon is ready to be adopted. She waits hopefully for the day her perfect match walks through the door.
From being a scared and lonely stray, Bon Bon has transformed into a playful and affectionate dog with boundless love to offer. Her future family will undoubtedly gain a joyful companion who brings laughter and light into their home.
