For Donna Lochmann, working as the chief life-saving officer at Stray Rescue in Missouri is more than just a career; it’s her passion. Seven years ago, while searching for a specific dog in the city, she noticed something unusual moving in a pile of trash. As she approached, she uncovered a heart-wrenching sight—a dog hidden among the garbage bags.
This poor creature blended perfectly with the debris due to his dark fur, and Donna knew in that instant that she had to act quickly to save him. However, she was aware that the dog might get frightened and flee, so she approached him gently and calmly. The dog was extremely undernourished and weak, but instead of running, he stayed put, lifting his head only when Donna was right beside him.

The dog’s sad eyes told a story of abandonment and neglect. As Donna took him into her arms, she knew he finally felt love for what might have been the first time in a long while. Noticing his visible ribs, Donna hurried to get him to Stray Rescue of St. Louis so that he could receive the care he desperately needed.
Recognizing that this dog’s future was changing for the better, the team aptly named him Kismet, which signifies fate. He moved into a warm foster home with a woman named Nikki. Over the following months, with plenty of food and affection, Kismet began to thrive and transform into an energetic and content dog.
Nikki shared updates with his rescuers, expressing joy in Kismet’s progress. “He’s doing wonderfully. He’s gaining weight, wagging his tail, and loves to give kisses. Kismet is such an awesome dog,” she said.

As she and her family became increasingly fond of Kismet’s loving disposition, Nikki made the decision to officially adopt him. The rescue team shared this happy news in a Facebook post, writing, “They officially adopted him and love him to pieces. She feels she’s the lucky one to have such an amazing dog.”
Recently, seven years after his initial rescue, Nikki and Kismet provided an uplifting update. Kismet has grown into a healthy and robust dog who cherishes his loving family. No longer sleeping in trash, he now enjoys a cozy bed with Nikki and plenty of toys.

“He sleeps in the big bed with her. He’s so happy. He loves toys. He’s a healthy, beefy boy. His eyes sparkle, and he lights up any room he walks into,” the rescue added in their most recent update.
Once discarded like trash, Kismet now stands as a testament to the transformative power of love and kindness from compassionate individuals who gave him a second chance at life.
