Some dogs in their senior years seek adventure-filled bucket lists, but not Ms. Gertrude—known affectionately as Gertie. Unlike those with grand plans, Gertie, a 14-year-old mixed-breed, has a simple goal: to receive 1,000 hugs.
Gertie and her little dog brother, Pablo, were left stranded at a McDonald’s in the scorching 107-degree heat of Arizona. While a viral Facebook post aimed to find them a home, Pablo’s shy nature and Gertie’s age of 12 worked against them.
Fortunately, their luck turned when Kate Goodhart saw the post and welcomed both into her home after picturing them braving the heat in their fur coats.

Despite Gertie being referred to as an “old lady,” those familiar with senior dogs know they bring unmatched joy and wisdom. On Gertie’s Facebook page, Goodhart shares her affection for Gertie, describing the serene life that comes with a senior dog.
Goodhart couldn’t understand why nobody was eager to adopt such a charming dog. The thought was that people might not have been ready for all the love Gertie had to offer.
Now, Gertie and Pablo are cherished members of the Goodhart family. Initially, the vet advised putting Gertie to sleep due to her health problems, but with love and care, she thrived.

Gertie is now on a heartfelt mission. In her golden years, she might be short on time, but not on enthusiasm for life.
Her mother claims she delights in “meeting new people and receiving hugs.” As such, the plan is to gather 1,000 hugs as a charming farewell for Gertie.
Goodhart hopes this endeavor will raise awareness of the beauty of older dogs, highlighting Gertie’s charm and zest for life. The mission is also about fun and providing happiness for Gertie.

If she becomes tired, she might have to pass on some hugs. Staying within the areas of Arizona and Nevada—Anthem, Cave Creek, and Carefree to south of Greenway—is the plan for the pair.
To support Gertie’s quest, feel free to send some warmth her way through Facebook or, better yet, stop by to give her a bear hug in person. Good luck, Gertie, on your mission to reach 1,000 hugs! We are sending you cuddles from afar!
