In Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming, a remarkable grizzly bear known as Grizzly 399, celebrated for frequently showcasing her cubs to tourists, has recently given birth to her 17th offspring at 24.
This feat is particularly noteworthy considering that grizzlies typically live only into their mid-20s in the wild.
Grizzly 399 defied expectations by delivering a litter of four cubs, a rare occurrence even for younger bears.
Her ability to continue producing offspring at her age underscores her exceptional maternal prowess and adaptability in the wilderness.
The bear has gained widespread attention for her habit of frequenting roadsides with her family, which has led to the creation of social media accounts dedicated to documenting her life.
It’s believed that this behavior helps her protect her cubs from male grizzlies, which are known to threaten young bears.
Photographers Kate and Adam Rice, who captured stunning images of Grizzly 399 and her new cubs, expressed surprise and admiration at her continued reproductive success.
Adam Rice remarked, “We were shocked when we heard she had four cubs, especially at her age—it seemed like her way of proving us wrong.”
Kate Rice, a photographer at the park, has developed a deep affection for bears and emphasizes the importance of observing these animals in their natural habitat.
She noted, “Grizzly 399 often forages near the road, offering people a rare glimpse into the daily life of a wild bear.”
Grizzly 399 first gained prominence in 2011 when she and her five-year-old daughter raised their cubs in the same area—an unprecedented behavior where the daughter even adopted one of 399’s cubs, successfully nurturing it herself.
