A litter of kittens found their way to an animal shelter in Warren County, VA, needing immediate foster care. The Animal Welfare League of Arlington coordinated to place them in a foster home.
Penny Richards, a rescue volunteer, took on the challenge. When she received the kittens, she discovered they were infested with fleas and needed urgent cleaning. “They required two flea baths and constant combing for the first week to get rid of all the fleas,” Penny told Love Meow.
The kittens, instantly affectionate, snuggled together in a close-knit group. Once cleaned and fed, they curled up and fell asleep in a cozy pile.
Over the following weeks, the orange kitten and her four siblings thrived under the devoted care of their foster family. They were named after a “cookie and milk” theme. The orange tabby, Shortbread, became the most talkative of the group.
Shortbread, along with Oatly, Silk, Almond Breeze, and Elmhurst, often snuggled together during naps, wrapping their limbs around one another. As they grew, they learned to wrestle and play, filling the foster room with their playful energy.

Once they mastered running, they started chasing each other around the room. Although given the freedom to roam the house, they mostly stayed in their room, enjoying the comfort of their cozy blankets. Gradually, they grew bolder and began exploring beyond their room.

Each kitten developed a unique personality. Oatly enjoyed exploring and discovering new toys, but he especially loved close-up cuddles.

Almond Breeze, one of the bravest along with Shortbread, enjoyed couch cuddles when sleepy. Shortbread was the first to greet Penny in the kitchen, often sharing stories with gentle meows.

Silk adored her siblings and showered them with affection, though she was more timid around bigger cats. Elmhurst, less adventurous than his siblings, still enjoyed exploring and playing, often vocalizing in an adorable manner.

The resident cat, Colman, took an interest in the kittens, offering guidance and affection. Having been in their position once, he showed them the ropes and provided comfort.

The kittens have grown significantly and are now ready for their new homes. They will soon begin their new lives with their forever families, just in time for the holidays.
