In a heartwarming tale of perseverance and rescue, the SWT/KWS Mara Veterinary team aided a distressed mother elephant in the Mara North Conservancy.
This heart-pounding rescue mission unfolded when a call for help came in on April 24th, alerting the team to a female elephant with an arrowhead lodged in her ear.

This urgent message triggered a swift response, and the dedicated team embarked on a challenging two-hour journey to reach the distressed elephant.
Their destination was a small hill covered in volcanic rocks, posing a significant access challenge.

However, with the invaluable assistance of the Mara Elephant Project’s ground team and a leased helicopter, the team successfully guided the injured mother and her calf downhill.
With the mother still accompanied by her young calf, the veterinary team wasted no time and carefully darted her to begin treatment.
The clock was ticking, and their experienced hands swiftly removed the arrowhead, cleaned and disinfected the septic wound, and administered vital antibiotics.

The lactating mother made a remarkable recovery, regaining her strength and resilience. An incredible moment followed as she and her calf moved in separate directions, raising concerns.
However, the two were finally reunited with the helicopter’s guidance, the mother, and the veterinary team’s assistance. Their heartwarming reunion left everyone involved with a sense of joy and relief.
The outlook for the healed mother is promising, and the team wishes them both a future filled with happiness and longevity in the lush plains and river forests of the Maasai Mara ecosystem.

This heroic rescue mission is a testament to the unwavering dedication of conservationists and veterinarians, ensuring the well-being of the majestic wildlife that graces the Mara North Conservancy.
