Old habits die hard, especially when they bring comfort. Scooter, a senior Chihuahua, faced a heartbreaking situation when his owner died.
Left behind by his owner’s family, Scooter was taken to a shelter after ten years of being a cherished pet.

Despite the sorrow of losing his owner and being abandoned, twelve-year-old Scooter struggled to adjust to his new life.
His hip problems further complicated the situation, making it even harder for him to find a new home.

At the Humane Society of Branch County, Michigan, caregivers shared photos of Scooter snugly tucked in, hoping to find someone who would appreciate his gentle nature.
A Lonely Wait Ends in Joy
Scooter’s independent and self-sufficient demeanor quickly caught the attention of potential adopters.
Among them was Jessica Lynn Howard, who, along with her husband, decided to give Scooter a new home. The news of Scooter’s adoption sparked joy and excitement in the Humane Society’s community.

Jessica, known for rescuing dogs like Scooter, noticed that the little Chihuahua maintained a nightly ritual from his past life.
“When it’s bedtime… he still tucks himself in. I’ve tried to tuck him in, but he would rather do it himself. He has to get the covers just right. It’s adorable watching him,” she shared.
A New Chapter and Lasting Legacy
In his new home, Scooter enjoys companionship and displays a youthful spirit. Jessica mentioned that despite his age, Scooter loves sharing his bed with friends and often acts playfully.
Jessica’s prompt decision to adopt Scooter inspired many across the country. Numerous people reached out to her, expressing their willingness to adopt elderly dogs, moved by Scooter’s story.
Given that older dogs have only a 25% adoption rate, according to the ASPCA, Scooter’s influence is significant.
Jessica shared with The Dodo that people sent her photos of the senior dogs they adopted, inspired by Scooter’s journey. Scooter’s legacy is a testament to the impact of love and second chances.
