As Hurricane Milton approached Tampa, Florida, people began preparing for the impending storm. Many residents followed evacuation orders, gathering their essential belongings and making their way to safer areas. However, not everyone was able to leave.

Amidst the chaos, a little white bull terrier-mix was spotted by the side of the road, seemingly abandoned while cars sped past. His inability to move stemmed from a distressing situation.

During routine checks, a Florida Highway Patrol officer noticed the dog’s head emerging from the tall grass. Concerned, the officer tried calling the dog over, but the animal remained still. Trusting his instincts, the officer decided to investigate and discovered the dog was tied to a fence.

The Florida Highway Patrol’s Tampa branch later shared on social media, “Troopers rescued a dog left tied to a pole on I-75, near Bruce B Downs Blvd this morning. Do NOT do this to your pets, please…”

When the officer approached, he realized the pup’s paws were submerged in rising floodwater. Time was of the essence, prompting the officer to act swiftly. However, the task was not straightforward.

Abandoned and already in distress, the dog displayed signs of fear, growling and barking as the officer neared. Nevertheless, the officer was undeterred by the pup’s reaction and devised a plan to help.

The officer began speaking gently to the dog, offering comfort and reassurance. “It’s OK. I don’t blame you. It’s OK, buddy,” he calmly told the uneasy dog.

With patience and kindness, the officer waded into the water, which had reached the dog’s neck, and carefully untied him from the fence. He then transported the dog to a veterinary clinic for an urgent health evaluation.

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles later confirmed in a social media update that the dog was safe and received a thorough check-up from the vet. Fortunately, the pup was in good health and was soon listed for adoption.
