Several Hollywood advocacy organizations have denounced Disney’s handling of Scarlett Johansson’s lawsuit concerning the release of Black Widow.
In response to how Disney addressed Scarlett Johansson’s legal action regarding Black Widow’s profits, multiple Hollywood advocacy groups have expressed their disapproval.
Scarlett Johansson took legal action against Disney due to the distribution strategy employed for the Marvel film Black Widow, seemingly hindering its potential earnings at the box office.
Her contract stipulates backend compensation, meaning her earnings are tied to the film’s theatrical performance.
With the simultaneous release of the movie on streaming platforms, her opportunity for significant bonuses was compromised.
Disney’s response to the lawsuit was described as “sad and distressing.”
Women In Film, ReFrame, and Time’s Up have joined forces to issue a collective statement in reaction to Disney’s handling of the situation.
The organization stated, “While we take no position on the business matters involved in the legal dispute between Scarlett Johansson and the Walt Disney Company, we firmly oppose Disney’s recent statement, which seeks to portray Johansson as insensitive or selfish for defending her contractual business rights.
This gender-based character attack is inappropriate in a business disagreement. It perpetuates an environment where women and girls are unfairly seen as less capable than men in safeguarding their interests without facing personal criticism.”
