A shelter is not the ideal place for a dog to grow up, but sadly, many dogs have no choice but to spend their days behind the bars of a kennel. Even in well-equipped shelters, staying for extended periods can be challenging for dogs. Unfortunately, this is the reality for a young pup named Spinach from Austin, Texas.
Spinach, a Great Pyrenees, arrived at Austin Pets Alive! (APA!) shelter on May 20, 2023, when he was only two months old. At the time, he had a severe eye injury, which was promptly treated by the shelter’s veterinarians who successfully removed the ruptured eye. However, Spinach returned to the shelter in November due to some behavioral issues related to resource guarding.
Throughout his stay, Spinach has been enduring the heat in a kennel, first as a puppy during the scorching summer and now, a year later, facing the same uncomfortable conditions. APA! highlighted this in a heartfelt TikTok video posted on August 7, 2024, showing Spinach from his early days at three months old to his current 432-day tenure at the shelter. A viewer summed up Spinach’s condition aptly, stating, “He looks defeated.”
Despite his cheerful demeanor and positive energy, Spinach has been overlooked by potential adopters. The ongoing challenge is finding him a loving home where he can thrive away from the harsh conditions of the shelter. The situation is particularly dire in Austin, where temperatures are soaring and shelter facilities are in dire need of updates.
“We’re struggling with our outdated facility and while we have plans to rebuild, it requires significant fundraising over the next few years,” explained Sanchez from APA!. “For now, our kennels are outdoors, and while we use fans and cooling techniques, it’s not the same comfort as a home. We welcome any support, whether through donations or those willing to open their homes to dogs like Spinach.”
The shelter is hopeful for Spinach’s future, describing him as house-trained, eager to learn, and good with adults and older children who can give him space. He gets along well with other dogs too, even helping to assess new arrivals at the shelter, as mentioned by Luis from APA!.
The shelter and supporters hope this increased attention will lead to a happy ending for Spinach, where he finds a family ready to welcome him into a loving and comfortable home. He undoubtedly deserves this chance for a better life.
