Homeless Dog, Bear, Overwhelmed by Loneliness After Five Years in Shelter

Last Update:

Detroit, Michigan — A dog named Bear, who has spent five years in a shelter, has grown so despondent that he struggles to lift his head to eat.

The Detroit Animal Welfare Group (DAWG) recently shared a heartbreaking video showing Bear’s condition, accompanied by the caption:
“Bear is so depressed that he cannot even lift his head to eat. Imagine staring at the same walls for five years in a kennel—it takes a toll.”

Despite his difficult past, Bear’s adoption profile describes him as a gentle and loving companion. He endured neglect from his previous owner but remains remarkably forgiving:
“You’d never guess he had a rough start—he holds no grudges. Bear is the ultimate loyal and affectionate couch potato, simply looking for a family to shower him with love. He’s a happy, cheerful pup eager for a second chance.”

Bear is both house-trained and crate-trained and knows basic commands. While he adores people, DAWG notes that his ideal home would be free of cats and small dogs.

Sadly, Bear’s long wait for a family has left him increasingly withdrawn. Shelter staff remain hopeful that someone will recognize Bear’s sweetness and provide him with the loving home he deserves.
