Feeding mostly on plankton, whale sharks have even been known to allow humans to hitch a ride when they swim nearby.

Recently, a group of divers had a remarkable encounter with one of these magnificent creatures near Socorro Island, approximately 250 miles south of Baja, Mexico.

During a dive aboard the Solmar V, the divers noticed a whale shark brushing against their hands, sparking their curiosity. Upon closer inspection, they realized that the massive fish was in distress.

It had a large rope tightly wrapped around its body, encrusted with barnacles and cutting deep into its flesh. The divers understood that immediate action was necessary to help the struggling animal.

On their second morning dive, armed with cameras and determined to aid the whale shark, the divers embarked on a rescue mission.

Dave, one of the dive guides, approached the shark from the front, while Dani, another dive guide, swam to the shark from above. Dani skillfully cut the rope with a knife, liberating the whale shark.

In a heartwarming moment captured on video, the freed whale shark slowly swam away to freedom. The divers celebrated their successful rescue, exchanging knuckle bumps and rejoicing together.

They carefully retrieved the massive 2-inch diameter rope, speculating that it might have once been part of an anchor or mooring line.

The circumstances surrounding how the rope ended up entangled around the shark remain a mystery.

Although the ordeal left a scar on the whale shark, the most important outcome is that it survived and can continue its life unhindered.

Thanks to the dedication and swift action of these compassionate divers, the whale shark’s well-being was ensured.
