The poignant footage was taken by Patrick Ellis, a 60-year-old from South Africa, while on a family trip with his wife, Topaz, and son, Daniel, at Kruger National Park in South Africa.

Recorded on June 27, the young elephant struggles to keep up with its herd as it limps across the street.

It is thought that the elephant became ensnared in a trap, resulting in the amputation of its right hind foot.

Ellis shared his family’s shock at witnessing such brutal evidence of poaching in Kruger Park firsthand.

While camps inside the park display pictures of animals caught in snares, seeing it in person greatly impacted the family.

The wound appears fully healed, indicating that the resilient calf likely lived with the amputated leg for several months.
